How a dental crown treatment is performed.

Anatomically a tooth can be divided into two greater parts: the root, which is the support part of the tooth and is implanted within the maxillary or mandibular bone, and the crown, the visible part of the tooth.

Under normal conditions, meaning when we find healthy tissues, the root of the tooth is covered by the gums and bone.

Today’s porcelain dental crowns are so strong they can provide the necessary strength and resistance to grinding to guarantee a long lasting dental restoration.

Dental crowns as prosthetic devices,  are artificially created tooth structures that cover the visible part of a tooth.

Dental crowns not only performs the function of a natural tooth, but it to a great extent restores and protects the integrity of damaged teeth.

A dental crown treatment may be used to protect a cracked tooth, restore functionality of a tooth with excessive decay or replace a pre-existing crown.

The purpose of  dental crown treatment  is to reinforce a compromised tooth with a custom-designed form built with a biocompatible material.

Dentists today have a variety of conservative treatment options through which to restore teeth. If possible, these options should be explored and discussed before selecting the full coverage crown.

Dental crowns are built from different materials. Modern dental crowns can be made in porcelain fused to metal (PFM), or entirely of porcelain for better esthetic results.

Porcelain is a ceramic mineral material used to mold in conformity to the tooth to be restored, replicating the look of the natural tooth.

Porcelain dental crowns are used when a tooth has been damaged beyond the possibility of being restored with a conventional filling, after a tooth facture, tooth decay, broken or damaged filling, or extreme tooth wear.

Dental crowns in porcelain can now closely recreate the form and function of a damaged tooth.

Dental crowns covers completely the visible exterior part of the tooth from the gum level to the cusps or more prominent parts.

When do we choose to perform a dental crown treatment?

When the tooth is severely damaged, as in extensive decay, breakage, damaged extensive fillings, etc., that prevent the tooth from being restored with a filling or other conservative treatments, we then discuss with patient the option of doing dental crowns.

In some cases it is necessary to first have root canal treatment done before building the dental crown.

After we make a thorough dental examination and have a diagnosis and a complete view of the needs and specific individual conditions of our patient, we make sure he /she receives a detailed description, and all the possible alternatives for a complete dental treatment plan.

The Dental Crown Procedure

During the dental crown procedure, we dentists first prepare the tooth under local anesthesia to the specific shape needed, then make a close copy of it and the surrounding tissues by taking an impression of the whole area with a silicon material.

The impression is then sent to a dental laboratory for the dental crown to be created.

In the meantime we construct a customized temporary crown to protect the tooth while the final dental crown restoration is being made.

Once the  dental crown is completed, we try it in the tooth to make sure it fits and color is correct, as well as checking biting contacts. When everything is proved to be as desired, the tooth crown is cemented using a dental cement.

Crowns not only replace the original integrity and function of a tooth, but also improve its esthetic appearance.

Dental crowns can be indicated for natural teeth and on dental implants.
